Where should I move after my May 2010 graduation?
I am a college senior (yes!) and I am ready to explore new things. In May I will receive a degree in Urban Planning from a great university and I want to get a Master in Real Estate Development and to get into the better programs it is strongly recommended that applicants have field and/or work experience. I am from Southern NJ (blahhh) and basically refuse to go home. I have a couple thousand saved and I am sure after graduation more money will come. Here are my options:
California (Los Angeles Area or Inland Empire)
Atlanta, GA
Las Vegas, NV
New Orleans, LA (Never been but it just seems like a cool city)
NYC (I love the idea of NYC but I would love to have warmer winters & $$$ is a must)
Maryland/DC
Stay home/Philadelphia region (…sad face…tear…)
Please make suggestions on what you may know about the city, their job market and cost of living!
Thanks!

California, Vegas, and NYC would NOT be smart moves. No offense, but I’m surprised that someone with an urban planning degree doesn’t recognize how bad things are in Vegas right now. It’s not going to get better anytime soon. Vegas is dead.
There’s simply too much competition in California and NYC. Yes, you’ll earn a larger salary in those cities, but 95% of your income will go toward living expenses. Not worth it.
There’s still plenty of work in New Orleans and there will always be tons of work in the DC area. Even in the worst recessions, DC’s unemployment rate is substantially lower than most of the country.
Atlanta is doing okay, but not nearly as well as it was a few years ago.

I would say New Orleans.
Louisiana is fighting its way back from the devastating hurricane, not to mention the architecture is absolutely beautiful, and the food and music are amazing!!
Good Luck <3
