What kinds of jobs are in Las Vegas, NV?
I am thinking about moving to Las Vegas with my boyfriend. I am 24, he is 23. We have been dating for a year.
He lived in Vegas for 4 years for his high school and said that jobs are better there in terms of how much you make by the hour and there is no state taxes. I live in IL, making about 9.00 an hour at a fast food place. I have my associates in graphic design since Jan 08, but have been unable to find a job in the field, especially now with the economy.
I am taking a medical terminology in the summer in hopes of possibly becoming a medical coder. However, I will most likely have to take one class at a time due to cost and my parents will not help pay for it.
I’m not sure if I will qualify for financial aid or not exactly sure how student loans work. If I move to Vegas I will have to either find a full time job or wait a year for residency to get in district rates.
My boyfriend works at a dealership right now as a lube tech. He has over 2 years of experience. Strange thing is that the dealership refuses to give him a raise and he was making more as a porter in vegas!
My family (especially my mom) thinks that the the jobs there aren’t any better in Vegas then they are here. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. Worth, IL if you’ve heard of it. I have never lived on my own, I still live with my mom. My boyfriend said that if he could afford to live here then he would get an apartment with me. But he has no intention of staying here (I knew he wanted to move back to Vegas sometime b4 we got serious).
He plans on getting a 2 bedroom condo once he gets settled down. He’s going to live with his mom for at least 6 months (he has to because otherwise he can’t get a loan). Then I would move in with him. He’s moving mid June and if I moved mid August otherwise I"d have to wait a year and a half for residency for school.
If I moved and things didn’t work out I can always move back in with my mom. However, how’s she’s taking it’s going to be the end of my life if I decide to move with him. Is this how moms are? LOL.
I have no family there so that’s why I’m asking how the job market really is. We went on a trip for about a week there for me to see what it would be like. I really liked it there but am unsure if we broke up if I would want to continue living there.
Any feedback is appreciated.

obviously waitress jobs, bar tending, casino jobs, hotel jobs, and retail.
the job market is ok there, if you’re older than 21, my mom lives there and is a room Booker for The Excalibur hotel.

if you are good looking you can get a job as a waitress or cocktail waitress. All the hot places in ny and la have restaurants in vegas. you could make a ton of money b/c there will always be people traveling to vegas from all over and could look for a graphic design job on the side so you don’t have to waitress forever. also, you can substitute teach there with just a university degree. but if graphic design is what you ultimately want to do all the work is in l.a., ny, or texas. and you can start your own graphic design business doing freelance work which is even better than working for someone else. i wish i had that option. and vegas is warmer than chicago

i thought vegas was one of the worst job markets right now, with more home foreclosures than even detroit.
you can always be a stripper in vegas.

DO NOT move to Vegas right now. Unemployment is 10% and increasing. State, cities, and the county have frozen hiring. Casinos are laying people off and declaring bankruptcy. Businesses are going bankrupt and closing, like car dealerships and furniture stores.
Apartment rentals are high. You would end up paying at least $1,400 for a two bedroom in a decent area. Gas is high and piped in from CA. All groceries are trucked in from CA. Crime is increasing.
You will not qualify for financial aid for school unless you have lived in Vegas for over a year.
This is the Mohave Desert, HOT. There are not four seasons. People work 24/7 so many never see or talk to their neighbors. It is a hard place to make friends.
I would say stay where you are with family and friends

They have every job that is in anytown USA here.
CAreer builders and monster have a complete list of jobs.

The job market is between zero and none. Most of the jobs are sales jobs where you work for commission and get little or no base pay. Medical jobs are still in demand as there is still a lot of sick people. That is about it. All the casinos are still laying off and as the casinos go so does Vegas. Not a good time to even thing about moving here.
You have to read this website. It tells it the way it is for people who think about moving here. Statistics say that for every one job opening there are 100 applicants who are well qualified and already live here. They don’t want to hire someone who just moved here. Those people tend to get tired of Vegas and move away after a few months. Just telling it the way it is.
